Neurotoxin Injections FAQs

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand name for a type of botulinum toxin injection. Many patients use “Botox” as a general term for wrinkle-relaxing treatments, but it’s actually one of several available brands. In my practice, I most often use Jeuveau and Xeomin, depending on your goals, anatomy, and treatment plan. These treatments work by relaxing targeted facial muscles to soften wrinkles and fine lines over time.

How does a botulinum toxin injection work?

Botulinum toxin injections work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific muscles. By limiting repeated muscle contraction, I’m able to soften the lines that form from everyday expressions, including frown lines, forehead lines, and the lines around the eyes.

What areas of the face can be treated?

In my practice, Neurotoxin Injections are most commonly used to treat the forehead, the glabella (between the eyebrows), and crow’s feet. Depending on your facial anatomy and goals, I may recommend treatment in other areas where facial wrinkles are caused by repeated movement.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a subtle treatment where I use a small amount of botulinum toxin to relax the muscle around the upper lip. This allows the lip to gently roll outward, creating the appearance of a fuller upper lip without adding volume. It’s a good option if you’re looking for a natural enhancement or are not ready for dermal filler. I’ll help you decide if this approach aligns with your goals.

Is Botox only for cosmetic purposes?

No. While I primarily use botulinum toxin for cosmetic treatments in this setting, it is also used medically for conditions such as migraines, excessive sweating, and certain muscle disorders. The approach depends on the indication and treatment plan. If you are interested in medical treatment, we can discuss.

What is the difference between Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin?

Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are all botulinum toxin products used to temporarily relax targeted facial muscles and soften expression lines. Botox is the most widely recognized brand name, but I most often use Jeuveau and Xeomin in my practice. Jeuveau is sometimes referred to as “New Botox” because some patients notice results slightly faster, sometimes within a few days. Xeomin is often called the “naked” tox because it does not contain accessory proteins found in other botulinum toxin products. Depending on the patient, Xeomin may sometimes require slightly more units to achieve a similar effect. Each product has slightly different characteristics, and I’ll recommend the option that best aligns with your anatomy, goals, and treatment plan.

How long does a Botox appointment take?

Appointments are typically quick and designed to fit easily into your day. Most treatments are completed in a short office visit, and patients are usually able to return to normal activities shortly afterward.

Does a botulinum toxin injection hurt?

Most patients find the injections very tolerable. The sensation is brief, and while some areas can be more sensitive, discomfort is typically mild and short-lived.

When will I see results?

You may start to notice results within a few days, with full results typically visible around two weeks after treatment. This can vary slightly depending on the treatment area and your individual response.

How long do results last?

Results generally last about three to four months. Over time, muscle activity gradually returns, and I can help you plan maintenance treatments to keep results looking natural and consistent.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or mild bruising at the injection site. Some patients may experience a mild headache or, less commonly, temporary eyelid drooping. Serious side effects are rare, but these are prescription treatments, so I always review your medical history, medications, and any potential risks with you before proceeding.

What should I avoid before my appointment?

Before your treatment, I may recommend avoiding alcohol, excessive caffeine, strenuous exercise, sun exposure, facials, and active skincare ingredients like retinol or exfoliants. I may also advise you to pause certain blood-thinning supplements or medications to help minimize bruising.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments must be canceled at least 48 hours in advance to avoid a 20% cancellation fee. Late cancellations, no-shows, and deposits are handled according to practice policy.
